Balancing Optimism and Reality During Illness
There is a history of toxic positivity in our society. We haven’t learned how to support people with chronic illness or disabilities effectively. We’ve learned to invalidate, minimize, bypass, and deny the pain, grief, and “negative” feelings that are natural occurrences during the adversity of illness. When we are chronically ill, we don’t want to be burdensome and there’s pressure to stay positive, to not complain, or you’re seen as being a pessimistic victim and are to blame for your continued illness because you aren’t being positive, strong, or grateful enough. Emotions are okay, whatever they are. It’s harmful to suppress and deny the reality you are going through. It’s helpful to honor yourself, your true feelings, to process and grieve. Yes, it sucks to be sick. It is self-gaslighting to pretend that it doesn’t. ♡ #LongCOVID
