Music Promotes Discipline
I’ve always loved music. My parents would listen to those reel-to-reel tapes of musicals, jazzy music, and Gershwin. We’d listen to the radio and sing along in the car. I loved watching the musical variety shows popular back then in the seventies. My mother’s side of the family was musical, and they’d always sing together at gatherings. It gives me goosebumps remembering it. I played violin at school in fifth grade, as a reward for making good grades. Then, in sixth grade, my father rewarded me with singing lessons for making good grades. So I quit violin. I also played piano a little but quit that too so I could focus on singing. I sang from age 11 until 19. My father worked hard to afford us lessons. He had a paper route he’d do early in the morning before he’d go to his full-time job as a chemist at a plant. I’m thankful for learning so much through music. It gave me discipline and the ability to have patience and perseverance. ♡
